My name is Emma Shen and I don't know why this account is linked with my husband (Ian Dong)'s name.Before I went to see Dr. Herzig in 2012, I couldn't see close and couldn't see far and I had sever dry eye symptoms. My daily life was not good.After I went to Herzig Eye Institute, my dry eye problem was tackled by their team with eye drops, eye ointment, procedures. After I suffered less from the dry eyes, I had a procedure done and my proper visions lasted until 2022 (10 years.)In April 2022, I had another eye procedure done by Dr. Herzig to let my left eye for looking far and right eye for reading. It took time (around 10 months) to get my eyes adjusted. I am 60 years old and now I feel like my visions have gone back to the visions when I was young (I used to have perfect visions). Every time when I can see everything far and close, deep in my heart, I would always say to myself :"God bless Dr. Herzig and his team". I had laser eye surgery (SMILE) done in Toronto, Ontario in January 2023 and after a move to Ottawa, continued my care at the Ottawa office.MY EXPERIENCE AT HERZIG EYE INSTITUTEFrom the moment I inquired about the procedure to the very last follow up, I have had nothing but a fantastic patient experience with all of the staff, including front desk staff, patient services representative, Dr. Herzig (who completed my procedure in Toronto) and Dr. Nour in Ottawa (who I saw for followup appointments and check-ins). Before the procedure, Dr. Herzig took the time to speak to me on the phone to go through my list of questions (I had many) as well as in-person right before the surgery. Dr. Nour was wonderful in taking the time to explain what different options to respond to some challenges post-op, provided some great recommendations and answered all of my questions thoughtfully. I never felt rushed or unheard, and it was very easy to speak with him.The supportive team in both Ottawa and Toronto were wonderful throughout.MY EXPERIENCE WITH LASER EYE SURGERYI struggled with dry eyes for just over a year following the surgery. This required using eyedrops every day, multiple times a day as well as an evening salve in my eyes during this time.One issue that I did not come across much information about is the potential for other changes in your vision after the procedure. Following the surgery, I struggled and continue to struggle with farsightedness I cannot read text on my phone when it is close to me, labels, etc clearly as my vision is blurry. I had no issues before the surgery. It has improved over time but it still present.Ultimately, everyone is different and will have different experiences; where some have absolutely no side effects and others may deal with lifelong issues after the surgery. If you are aware of the potential outcomes and still feel laser eye surgery would improve your quality of life, I would recommend it. I would still go through the procedure as it has eradicated my near-sightedness, which was a challenge for me.A big thanks to Team Herzig!
