Learn how IntraLase is making a difference.

Superior Technology making LASIK even better!

Since LASIK was first approved in 1999, it has been proven to be an extremely safe and successful method of vision correction. The procedure has always involved two steps. The first being the creation of a corneal flap, and second the reshaping of the cornea with a laser. Technology has advanced steadily over the years and with the introduction of The VISX® WavePrint™ system a few years ago, the technology has given our Surgeons the capability of providing personalized vision correction due to the precise measurement taken-similar to a fingerprint of your vision. This allows the patient to achieve their optimal vision. Studies recently done at several North American laser centres have shown excellent results in WaveFront's ability to improve night vision.

Until the IntraLase Method, the creation of the corneal flap was the one step that lacked the technological sophistication of the two-step LASIK procedure. That step is a very important one in terms of providing patients with the best possible LASIK outcomes.

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free approach to creating a corneal flap. The computer guided Intralase® laser delivers rapid pulses of light, a quadrillionth of a second each, to a pre-programmed depth and position within your cornea. Each pulse forms a microscopic bubble. As the Intralase® laser moves back and forth across the eye, the bubbles connect to form a corneal flap. The surgeon then lifts the flap where these bubbles have created a smooth surface.

Prior to the IntraLase Method, the Surgeons at the Herzig Eye Institute created the corneal flap with an instrument called a microkeratome, an oscillating, and hand-held steel blade. Although the microkeratome produced excellent results, the patient was at a higher risk for a flap complication. Complications for the LASIK procedure are minimal, but when they to occur it is most likely related to the creation of the corneal flap. The Surgeon can manage these complications quite easily but it does create an inconvenience to the patient due to an increase in post-operative appointments.

Benefits to you:

  • You can be confident that you are receiving the most advanced technology available by combining the InraLase® Method with the Visx®WavePrint™ system.
  • Eliminates the need to use a blade at all – lowering the patient's risk of a flap complication.
  • IntraLase creates an extremely smooth and better-prepared surface for the laser treatment, resulting in superior visional outcomes. Clinical Studies have shown The IntraLase Method provides more patients with 20/20 vision or better.
  • The IntraLase Method has the capability of creating smoother, uniform thinner corneal flaps. Patients who were not eligible for LASIK surgery with a microkeratome due to steep flat or thin corneas have a better chance of having the LASIK procedure.

The Herzig Eye Institute is committed to providing you with the most proven, approved technology available today. Our goal is to enhance your opportunity to achieve your best possible personal vision.
