When Will I Need Cataract Surgery?

vibrant senior citizen

Cataract surgery is usually recommended when people feel their quality of life is affected and their ability to perform normal activities (driving, reading or sports) are compromised. When cataract symptoms begin, you may be able to cope temporarily with a new prescription for your glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids.

In North America, you cannot legally drive unless your vision is at least 20/40 (which means, you are able to see at 20 feet what the average person can see at 40 feet). If you enjoy the independence of driving, you may wish to have surgery earlier to avoid a temporary loss of your driving license. If driving is not essential, you may choose to stop driving and delay surgery until the cataracts interfere with other activities.

When patients feel that their blurred vision interferes with their day-to-day life, surgical remedies should be considered.

What To Do If You Suspect You Have A Cataract

If you believe you have developed a cataract and want to consider surgery, ensure that you are thoroughly informed. Understand the various options available to you. Make an appointment with your ophthalmologist, optometrist or family doctor, or contact the Herzig Eye Institute directly. No referral is required.

A simple eye exam will determine the presence of cataracts and you will be referred to a reputable surgeon.

Modern cataract surgery is performed using ultrasound energy. For many years, surgeons have replaced the eye's old, cloudy or discoloured lens with a new, clear plastic or silicone intraocular lens (IOL). The most common form of IOLs for cataract surgery are monofocal, designed to correct vision at one distance. The lens technology is the only significant difference between traditional cataract surgery and our Advanced Refractive Cataract Surgery. The surgical procedure and recovery are the same.

The Herzig Eye Institute distinguishes itself with providing extensive information for people seeking treatment, co-managing care with all eye care physicians, while determining the most effective treatment for each patient on an individual basis. All options are discussed including advanced refractive cataract surgery.

Choose the Right Surgeon

Ask yourself how comfortable you feel with the surgeon, staff and facility. Do you feel respected? Do you sense empathy, genuine compassion and confidence? Have they provided you with information and proper informed consent materials? Are you able to speak with former patients about their experiences? Be sure to ask the surgeon to provide you with adequate information about the surgical procedure, risks, length of recovery, long-term results and suggested follow-up.

The surgeon should patiently discuss options with you and answer all of your questions so you are informed, counseled, and fully understand your options and what treatment (intraocular lens) will best suit your needs.
