The Herzig Eye Institute utilizes the latest (and safest) technology for Advanced Cataract Surgery to increase your potential of regaining your full range of vision, including reading vision. Utilizing presbyopic and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL’s) that simulate the youthful, natural lens, 85-90% of patients receiving multifocal lenses are completely glasses free following their surgery.

Modern cataract surgery is performed using ultrasound energy. For many years, surgeons have replaced the eye's old, cloudy or discoloured lens with a plastic or silicone intraocular lens (IOL). The most common form of IOL’s for cataract surgery are monofocal, designed to correct vision at one distance. Advanced Cataract Surgery is designed not only to provide excellent distance vision without glasses but also to eliminate the need for reading glasses when possible.

This is achieved with the use of either a multifocal IOL or an accommodative IOL which simulates the function of the youthful, natural lens. These IOL’s provide reading vision in different ways.

Careful patient selection is necessary to determine which patients are good candidates for a multifocal IOL and which patients are good candidates for an accommodative IOL. For those who are not candidates, the Herzig Eye Institute offers more advanced high definition monofocal IOLs, either an aspheric IOL that provides superior vision under dimmer light conditions or a Toric IOL that corrects astigmatism thereby again reducing or eliminating the need for glasses for distance.
